Dr. Samuel P. Perry

Dr. Samuel P. Perry studied History and Communication during his undergraduate studies and Communication in his M.A. studies at Baylor. His Ph.D. from Georgia State University is in Communication with a focus on Rhetoric & Public Address. He studies race and racism in the United States with a particular focus on the ways in which anti-black racism manifests in the public sphere through political, religious, and popular discourse. He has published in Rhetoric Society Quarterly, the Southern Communication Journal, Argumentation & Advocacy, and other outlets. He completed his book "Rhetorics of Race and Religion on the Christian Right: Barack Obama and the War on Terror" and it was published in the Spring of 2020, which examines the ways in which President Obama faced criticisms based on his race and religion through his candidacy as and his presidency. Dr. Perry has a forthcoming article in the journal Rhetoric, Politics, and Culture titled "Effigies Lynching and Mediated Circulation in Football Jersey Burning" and another forthcoming piece in the Charleston AME Church Massacre in the ABC-CLIO History of American Racial Violence. Both of those pieces will be out this year. He coordinates the World of Rhetoric sequence in the BIC and the Graduate Fellowship in Interdisciplinary Rhetorical Studies. He teaches World of Rhetoric I & II, and for the past few years has been teaching the class in a hybrid format that includes dual credit high school students joining our traditional BIC cohort. Dr. Davide Zori and Dr. Perry have also developed a new Capstone course, "Not a Hero, Not a Villain."
