Message from the Director
Greetings incoming students!
I am Dr. Darren Middleton, or Dr. M., the new Director of the Baylor Interdisciplinary Core, aka: The BIC. For over twenty-five years the BIC has offered an unparalleled opportunity for gifted and committed individuals to journey across many, different territories of thought and practice. I am thrilled to have you join us.
Like you, I am new both to Baylor and to the BIC. When I visited campus over the spring, I was overwhelmed by the strong sense of a Christian intellectual community. In recent days, I have discovered just how genuine this community is. And as I have quickly learned, the official welcome to our area of Morrison is “BIC’em.”
So, let me be one of the first to say, “Welcome and BIC’em”!
Our BIC ethos is one of collaboration, respect, and thoughtful care among a dedicated, experienced staff and faculty. It takes a team effort to do what we do. Be assured that your success on the journey ahead is our primary focus. And be prepared. Over the course of the next four years, we will explore much terrain. Together, as pilgrims on a graced search for meaning, we will find treasures, whether that be in the great tragedies of Euripides, the mystical visions of St. Hildegard, the cloudscape canvases of Georgia O’Keefe, or even the lyric baritone of Harry Styles.
As I unpack my own boxes, with an 80s music playlist at the ready, I am eager to begin this semester—this new journey—with you. Please stop by my office (Morrison 101.11) and introduce yourself. And over the next four years, do not ever hesitate to ask me for help. My door is always open.
Again, BIC’em!
Dr. Darren J. N. Middleton
Director of BIC, Professor of Literature and Theology
