Larry Browning, Education
Dr. Browning was a member of the Task Force that helped start the BIC in the early 1990s.
Larry Jack Browning, Ed.D., joined Baylor University in 1977 and served as the chair of the Department of Curriculum & Instruction from 2006 - 2019. Dr. Browning advocates for increased subject matter knowledge for teachers and for the importance of clinical or field-based experiences in teacher education. He was instrumental in the planning and implementation of the Baylor University's award-winning Professional Development School (PDS) model of teacher preparation. In the PDS program he has coordinated the freshmen course, served as a University Liaison at a PDS, and as content faculty.
He developed and taught the coursework for the Elementary Reading Specialization in the 1980’s and partnered with Dr. Elden Barrett at LaVega Elementary School to develop one of the first field-based courses in the School of Education in support of that specialization. He worked with Dr. Tom Proctor to develop an after-school and summer reading clinic with undergraduate reading specialists and special education pre-service teachers to serve students having difficulty in learning to read.
Browning has taught undergraduate and graduate courses in Reading, Social Studies and Curriculum. Currently he teaches in the literacy cognate of the graduate programs.
Prior to joining the School of Education faculty, Dr. Browning taught in secondary and elementary schools and served as an elementary school principal in Jefferson County Alabama. He earned an Ed.D. in Elementary and Early Childhood Education at the University of Alabama, an MA in Elementary Education at the University of Alabama, Birmingham, and the B.S.Ed. in Secondary Education (History and Political Science) at Jacksonville State University.
