Jim Nolen, Computer Science

Dr. Jim Nolen was a member of the Task Force that helped start the BIC in the early 90s. Dr. Nolen was an expert in data-base management systems, mentor and teacher, and he played a key role in educating thousands of students in computer science. He was granted tenure in 1985 at Baylor and was associate professor of computer science from 1981 to 1989. He was appointed to the highest academic rank of full professor of computer science in 1989.
In 1984, he founded the Baylor chapter of the Upsilon Pi Epsilon National Computer Science Honor Society and has since served as its faculty advisor. He was an expert at academic advisement and excelled at directing student data-base projects. Numerous senior computer science classes recognized him as an Outstanding Professor in computer science.
He served several terms on the Faculty Senate and numerous university, school, and departmental committees, most directly affecting student life and educational opportunities.
Dr. Nolen died on December 3, 1995. Though he did not get to see BIC's Alpha cohort in 1995, the BIC is thankful for Dr. Nolen's contribution to the program.
