In this talk Dr. Mike Leeson, Director of the Iris Murdoch Research Centre at the University of Chichester, will reflect on Murdoch's 1972 essay 'Salvation by Words', which opens with 'Tyrants always fear art because tyrants want to mystify while art tends to clarify'. Through Murdoch's fiction, philosophy and theological thought this lecture will ask what we can gain through revisiting her work, what her work might say to us in this age of global uncertainty, and if it can provide a path to a resetting of ethical normativity.
